Danish Modern Furniture
Elevating Design to an Art

Become a member of SAF and this event plus a copy of Tour Sarasota is FREE!

You’re invited on Tuesday February 21, 2012 from 5 – 7 pm to a screening of the
film “Life by Design”
about the origins and evolution of Danish modern furnitu
re. There will be an introduction and discussion after the film with interior designer Wilson Stiles. A small collection of Danish furniture and books will also be on display for attendees to view.

The film focuses on three iconic Danish designers Arne Jacobson, Hans Wegner and Poul Kjaerholm, demonstrating the fusion of Scandinavian craft with modern industry. Danish furniture undefined from Jacobsen’s stylishly simple chairs to Wegner’s rounded, organic ones
undefined is known as the ultimate image of modernity. The timeless allure of
Danish design is due mostly to its simple lines, a deliberate lack of decoration,
and a consistent pursuit of functionalism.

Wilson Stiles holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Florida with a specialty in Historic Preservation. He has practiced design in Sarasota, New York and the Midwest, and in contrast to his involvement in historic projects, his interiors are known for their refined, modern simplicity. He has served on the boards of the Preservation Institute: Nantucket and the Victorian Society in America, as well as the design and restoration committee of The Mount, the Berkshire home of author Edith Wharton. Wilson presently serves on the board of the Sarasota Alliance For Historic Preservation and is a member of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation.
