SAF’s Walker Guest House Replica @ The Ringling officially opened to the public during SarasotaMOD© Weekend, November 6 – 8, 2015, and will be on exhibit until April 7, 2017. MOD 2015 celebrated architect Paul Rudolph’s legacy with tours, lectures, dinners and parties in midcentury homes.

Presentation 1: Twitchell and Rudolph, $40

Paul Rudolph’s first job in Sarasota was with architect Ralph Twitchell. Christopher Wilson, professor at Ringling College of Art + Design, will lead the panel in a discussion of Twitchell’s work and the complex relationship between Twitchell and Rudolph. The panel includes architect John Howey, one of Twitchell’s last partners Richard Allen, architect and author Joe King and Twitchell’s granddaughter Julie Hutchins-Wilson.

Presentation 2: The Walker Guest House and the Replica, $40
3:30 to 4:45 pm, Mildred Sainer Auditorium, New College
SAF’s replica of the Walker Guest House is the highlight of MOD this year. Author and architectural critic, Alastair Gordon and his panel will explore this remarkable structure, and the “lessons learned” in building the replica. The panel includes architect longtime admirer of the Guest House Joyce Owens, AIA, RIBA, architect and builder of the replica, Joe King, and Kutzi Preist, daughter of Elaine Walker.

This panel of architects will talk about their personal experiences of learning from and working with Paul Rudolph. Larry Scarpa, FAIA, Principal, Brooks + Scarpa, 2014 Smithsonian National Design Award winner, will moderate the panel that includes Carl Abbott, FAIA, youngest member of the Sarasota School of Architecture and a student of Rudolph’s at Yale, and Roberto de Alba, the author of Paul Rudolph: The Late Work.

Presentation 5: Rudolph After Sarasota, $40
1:45 to 3 pm, Historic Asolo Theater, The Ringling
Timothy M. Rohan, author of The Architecture of Paul Rudolph, Yale University Press, 2014, will focus his presentation on Rudolph’s work after he left Sarasota in 1958 to become chair of Yale University’s Department of Architecture. Rohan will start his discussion with Rudolph’s 1960 Addition to Sarasota High School and conclude with Rudolph’s remarkable projects in Southeast Asia.

Presentation 6: The Rudolph Legacy, $40
3:15 to 4:30 pm, Historic Asolo Theater, The Ringling
C. Ford Peatross, founding director of the architectural archive at the Library of Congress, home of the Rudolph Archive, will discuss Rudolph’s legacy with Sean Khorsandi, co-director of the Paul Rudolph Foundation, Carl Abbott, FAIA, SAF’s mentor, and Erica Stoller, director of ESTO and co-author of Ezra Stoller: Photographer.
